REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE IS A METHOD OF FARMING THAT PRIORITIZES THE HEALTH OF THE PLANET'S SOIL.
IT INCREASES BIODIVERSITY, IMPROVES DROUGHT TOLERABILITY OF THE LAND & ONCE IMPLEMENTED AT SCALE, WILL HELP SOLVE CLIMATE CHANGE.
But, in order to understand the significant benefits Regenerative Agriculture will have on the future of humanity, it first makes sense to take a quick look at conventional farming as we know it today.
Born in a post war era & built on principles of "production at scale, no matter the cost" industrial agriculture (or conventional farming) is proving to be one of the most destructive forces known to mankind & a leading contributer to climate change.
It's a system built on a vicious cycle of massive fossil fuel use, over-tilling, over-grazing & a near lethal application of synthetic fertilizers, pesticides and fungicides in order boost food yields.
Instead of honouring natural processes where livestock & plants work in harmony with one another, we've completely isolated these 2 precious life forces.
We've inhumanely crammed our animals into feedlots, confined to a life of self gorging on genetically modified feed.
We've turned our once diverse open plains into single species, monocropped monstrosities.
And we've incorrectly managed our livestock, leading to mass desertification of the worlds grasslands.
What was once a world filled with diversity & life, is slowly becoming a scene from our worst nightmare.BUT ... IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THIS WAY.
MOVING TOWARDS REGENERATIVE AGRICULTURE
Regenerative Agriculture is a method of farming that actively avoids the worst consequences of an industrial system.
A method of farming that supports life, actively sequesters CO2 from the atmosphere & honours the deeply profound spirit of the animal. An animal grazing freely on the land.
A key difference in a Regenerative vs Conventional System is the HOLISTIC MANAGEMENT OF LIVESTOCK.
A way of managing the animals to mimic nature, improve soil health & support earth's natural ecosystems.
Livestock move constantly across the land, mimicking the PREDATOR PREY RELATIONSHIP.
They huddle together in a way that's natural to their identity.
They eat the grass, absorb the nutrients & 'pee & poo' all over the land.
Then, as a result of the animals staying close together to protect themselves from predators (as nature intended), the shear concentration of 'pee & poo' acts as the most powerful NATURAL FERTILIZER we could ask for, funnelling key nutrients down into to the seed banks that lay dormant within the soil.
And the result of all this?
A world where what was once dying, is now a full of life.
A world where what was once desertified, is now an abundance of luscious photosynthesizing grasslands.
A world where as a result of the scale of Carbon Dioxide being sequestered from the atmosphere, the climate has stabilized.
And a world in which we can now be proud to pass on to future generations.
